What is the project?
The project is going to install advanced technologies to monitor student hall energy consumption, and provide an improved and efficient online payment system for the air-conditioner and laundry rooms. This will be done by installing smart meters to record the room’s electrical energy consumption and populate the data into the IBM IoT cloud for analysis.
What is the problem this project is trying to address?
Revamping the old payment system for facilities in the student halls has become a priority as it is currently outdated and inefficient. Moreover, it is necessary to reduce electric consumption and create a sustainable mindset within residents of the student halls.
How does this project support our sustainable smart campus as a living lab vision?
By incorporating a comprehensive real time data analysis system, improving the payment experience and bringing it online, and allowing for greater autonomy regarding energy consumption. This will raise the awareness change students’ daily electricity usage pattern as they’ll be able to track it through a web portal.
By September 2019, two rooms in hall VI were using the GGT Smart Campus POC. After sufficient testing for integration and user acceptance, the mass rollout can be applied for the GGT building in around three months. The experimental trial of the GGT energy payment system was conducted on floors 8, 9 and 10 of UG Hall VI concluded in November 2019. In the experiment, rooms with residents who logged on to view their energy consumption showed up to 60% lower energy consumption than those on the same floor who did not. Some residents also reflected that they changed some of their habits in order to reduce energy use in their rooms. The trial run also demonstrated some potential issues that would need to be addressed before full implementation.
